I wish I could agree with Other Ben, but Betancourt's been serving up meatballs just like Borowski. There are no good answers in the pen right now.
Having said that, I do not place last night's loss at the feet of the offense for failing to add on runs. It cheesed me off when Matt Underwood was going on about how those extra runs the Indians left on base could really hurt them.
True, but damn it, they pay Borowski millions of dollars to be the guy who can come in and nail down the one-run save. If a one-run lead is as good as a loss with JoeBo out there, then he's not really a closer, is he?
JoeBo needs to be designated for assignment right now, which means the Indians should finally be convinced of it by ... oh, let's say Flag Day.
I think Wedge gives him one more chance and if (when) he fails, he'll be let go/demoted/taken out back and shot.
I really hope that they have some kind of contingency plan in place. I mean, it's not like this is unexpected. What? Joe Borowski is giving up taters? Wah? But he led the AL in saves? Who could've ever foreseen this happening?
I tend to think they'll tap Masahide Kobayashi before they mess up the key set up spots.
for the record, I don't believe he's hurt. If JoBo was actually hurt, they should've shut him down before the season even started. I can't believe that they knew he was hurt and then tossed him out there anyways.
I believe this is a phantom injury (kinda like I think Eric Snow isn't really injured. They're just doing him a favor, cause there's no way he's ever going to be an effective NBA player again) and that they're just trying to save face.
Also, the closer's role isn't going to be a big issue if they can't score runs. I believe it's time for Ben Francisco and maybe a trade (I'd like Ken Griffey Jr on one of the corners, even though they could really use a right handed bat).
I don't see the offense as a huge issue. They put up seven runs on the A's in the series finale, and both games against Boston were tight, well-played games until the bullpen blew it in the ninth.
Although I wholeheartedly agree that it's time for Ben Francisco. But where to play him? RF and LF both need help. Gutz isn't hitting, and Dellicheals is one sorry platoon.
It's kind of a chicken/egg proposition. The bullpen won't have leads to protect if the offense sucks, but with a bad bullpen, it won't matter how many leads the offense hands them. Case in point: 2006, when the Indians had one of the best offenses in baseball and still won just 78 games.
Right now, I tend to place more blame on the bullpen because the Indians are getting leads, but they aren't winning games.
